Jean Dornevil, the artist
Mission: "PRESENT TO THE WORLD THE HAITI THAT THE MEDIA NEVER SHOWS OR TALKS ABOUT"
Jean Dornevil is an artist who takes pride in depicting his Haitian culture and heritage in his paintings. He is an artist whose mission is to promote his culture to the world through art (Paintings), because he realizes that the media does not adequately depict the richness of his culture, but on the poverty and unfortunate situations with which his people often encounter and must overcome. Jean Dornevil was born in Haiti, where he lived until March 14 of 2005. He then moved to the United States where he graduated from Naples High School and then moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida A&M University (FAMU). “Once I moved to the United States, I could not stop thinking about the Haitian provincial culture that I had experienced for all my life. I was shocked and somewhat saddened when I could no longer see the natural and sweet surroundings where I grew up. Things such as goats, cows, chickens, donkeys… plentiful trees with many different type of fruits… people walking up and down the hills with baskets of all those juicy, tasty fruits are what I miss most about Haiti.” “I have felt that I need to paint these memories so they do not fade away from my mind’s view, and I am so glad these inspirations stuck me.” “My hope is that these paintings will give you the feeling of the beautiful land in which I lived, and perhaps even create a moment in which you can escape to somewhere far different from where you now are.”
Jean Dornevil is currently a Doctor of Physical Therapy. His goal is, in the more distant future, open his own practice. "When I open my physical therapy center, the front of the building will be an art gallery through which my patients will pass in order to reach my physical therapy office and practice area." He wants to do it that way because he understands the power and the importance of art in the treatment of any abnormality.
